Obama scares democratic rivals but not the GOP. The democrats are scared Obama might get the nomination or cause a split in the party like Jesse Jackson and Eugene McCarthy did. But the GOP knows how to beat black candidates in swing states. They are only nervous longer term because the racist ads they'd run might hurt them in the future and keep them from ever getting more than 10% of the black vote, which they covet. It would also hurt them with Hispanics whom they desperately need to attract.

This same kind of feverish support was given Howard Dean in 2003-2004 by the base. But if he had been nominated, Dean would have lost 45 states, similar to Dukakis and McGovern.
