Someone tell me again how bad the American worker has it due to immigrant labor pushing down wages. The maids who work 6-7 days a week here receive $200 per month as a base....

Filipina housemaids' wages set to double

Dubai: The Philippine authorities are considering doubling the salaries of domestic helpers who come to work in the UAE from the existing Dh700 to Dh1,400, Gulf News has learnt.

According to an official from the Philippines Consulate in Dubai, Manila is studying a proposal to increase housemaids' salaries from $200 to $400.

The official, however, said it was still a proposal which will be issued by the government if approved by different departments in Manila. He said the proposal was being finalised. It was set to be implemented by December 15 but offices in Manila are still drawing up the main points.

"They are drawing the lines to increasing payment of housemaids. It was supposed to be imposed mid-December we still have no feedback yet from Manila," he said.

According to the proposals, only housemaids with new contracts will be paid Dh1,400 - salaries will remain the same for maids whose contracts were issued before the new rule.

A labour agency in Sharjah said they were aware of the new proposal but had not yet received any instructions in this regard from the Philippine consulate.

"But if they really do implement it, no one will hire domestic helpers from the Philippines," said Manal, from the Sharjah-based labour agency.

She said that those who work in beauty salons here are paid Dh1,400 - which would mean they would be earning the same as newly-hired maids.

"That will create mess and confusion," she said.

The step was also not welcomed by Emiratis and expatriates who said that if the proposed rules were to be implemented no one would employ housemaids from the Philippines.

Impractical

"It is impractical because such housemaids in some other countries such as Lebanon and Syria are paid only $100 which is less than Dh400," said Abdullah from Dubai.

"I would prefer to hire two maids of another nationality with a lower salary rather than one maid from the Philippines," said Radwa from Ajman.

Most investments produce "new jobs", but that means people who would have been doing other things are now working in the new area. You can look at what you pay them as part of the cost, or you can consider the cost in non dollar terms to include their labor, or the opportunity cost of what they would have produced has they not been working in the new area.
