NEWS RELEASE HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES CENTRAL COMMAND 7115 South Boundary Boulevard MacDill AFB, Fla. 33621-5101 Phone: (813) 827-5894; FAX: (813) 827-2211; DSN 651-5894 PHASE II OF OPERATION TOGETHER FORWARD KICKS OFF IN BAGHDAD 8/8/2006 06-08-08P BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers launched Phase II of Operation Together Forward, also known as Ma’an ila Al-Amam, in an effort to increase security and reduce violence in the Iraqi capital Monday. The operation is a combined effort between the Iraqi National Police, the Iraqi army, Iraqi police and MND-B to reduce the level of murders, kidnappings, assassinations, terrorism and sectarian violence in the city and to reinforce the Iraqi government’s control of Baghdad. Phase II, which is supported by the government of Iraq, began with the combined forces of the Iraqi National Police and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, conducting clearing operations in Baghdad. “We must dramatically reduce the level of violence in Bagdad that is fueling sectarianism,” said Maj. Gen. J.D. Thurman, commander, Multi-National Division – Baghdad. “Iraqi and U.S. forces will help the citizens of Baghdad by reducing the violence that has plagued this city since the Samarra bombing.” Phase II of Operation Together Forward is designed to allow the government of Iraq to reduce the level of violence in the city and follow up on the successes of Phase I of the operation. During Phase I, which began July 9, Iraqi Security Forces and MND-B Soldiers have killed or captured 411 murderers associated with death squads. Together the combined forces conducted more than 32,382 combat patrols, seized more than 43 weapons and ammunition caches. Approximately 6,000 additional Iraqi Security Forces are being sent to the MND-B area of operations in support of Phase II, as well as approximately 3,500 Soldiers of 172nd Striker Brigade Combat Team, which is based out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska; 2,000 Soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, which is based out of Baumholder, Germany and has served as the theater reserve force since November. “Iraqi and Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldiers will not fail the Iraqi people,” said Thurman. “We want what the Iraqi people want – a prosperous country free from terror.” FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS RELEASE, CONTACT THE MULTI-NATIONAL DIVISION - BAGHDAD PUBLIC AFFAIRS NCO IN CHARGE, MASTER SGT.
