Apparently the surgery went well and, shades of Strom Thurmond and Ronald Reagan, only death or resignation removes a Senator from office.

There's no requirement to be actually up and running although he might not be able to vote --- shades of Thurmond and Reagan. Apparently after the rules are drawn up in the Senate, the majority stays the majority.
