There is a big difference between the run of the mill western democracy and the USA. In the US the well to do still have a much greater political influence than their numbers. And the richer they are, the greater the influence. The main reason for this is the virtually unlimited amount of money that they can contribute directly or indirectly to elect politicians. That's why groups with relatively small numbers of voters but a lot of money exert such a huge influence on US policy.

So, if there is one country where buying land for the long term is a good idea, it would be the USA.
