Tim Johnson was having an "uncomplicated" recovery from brain surgery and no additional surgery had been required on the South Dakota Democrat, U.S. Capitol physician Adm. John Eisold said on Thursday. "No further surgical intervention has been required," Eisold said in a statement. But the senator's office said that could change, and the next 24 to 48 hours was a critical period. Johnson was hospitalized on Wednesday and doctors found bleeding in his brain. His serious illness led to speculation over whether Democrats could lose their razor-thin hold on the new Senate if Johnson could no longer serve. Noting that Johnson was now "appropriately responsive to both word and touch," Eisold said the 59-year-old senator "has continued to have an uncomplicated post-operative course." Noah Pinegar, a Johnson spokesman, cautioned: "At this point no further surgery has been needed. The next 24 to 48 hours remain the next critical benchmark." Democrats narrowly wrested control from President George W. Bush's Republicans in the U.S. Congress in last month's elections, gaining just a 51-49 majority in the Senate when it convenes in three weeks. However, if Johnson, 59, were to leave office, Republicans could gain control of the Senate, with Vice President Dick Cheney having the power to break tied votes. "We're all praying for a full recovery, we're confident that will be the case," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
