NFL Offers Cable Firms Week of Network Associated Press Wednesday, December 13, 2006; Page E08 The NFL has offered one free week of its network programming to two cable TV operators that do not carry the channel, in hopes of breaking a deadlock. Commissioner Roger Goodell told the Associated Press yesterday that the week of Dec. 24-30 would be offered as a "free view" for customers of Cablevision and Time Warner Cable, two of the nation's largest cable carriers. Neither Cablevision nor Time Warner carry the NFL Network. Three regular season Thursday night games already have not been available to those customers -- except in the markets of the participating teams, where the games aired on broadcast stations. Although the free week will not include the game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins on Dec. 30, it will include the Texas Bowl, featuring Rutgers vs. Kansas State on Dec. 28, and the Insight Bowl, with Minnesota vs. Texas Tech, on Dec. 29. The NFL Network is available in about 40 million of the 111 million homes with televisions. ESPN, which airs Monday night games, is available in 92 million. ? CHIEFS: Kansas City owner Lamar Hunt was fighting for his life in a Dallas hospital, and friends and family of the 74-year-old pioneer of the modern NFL were hoping for "miracles." Hunt has battled cancer for several years and was hospitalized the day before Thanksgiving with a partially collapsed lung. Doctors discovered that the cancer has spread, and Hunt has been under heavy sedation since last week. ? LIONS: Detroit placed running back Kevin Jones on injured reserve, ending his season two days after he injured his left foot Sunday. Team officials said Monday they were concerned he may have a Lisfranc fracture-dislocation. ? TITANS: Tennessee defensive tackle Randy Starks agreed in court to continue anger management counseling, and a domestic assault charge against him will be dismissed if he has no further incidents with the woman involved. Starks had been free on $2,000 bond. He was charged in a scuffle Aug. 12 involving then-fiancee Tuere Tene Rodriguez. ? VIKINGS: Defensive backs coach Joe Woods has been charged with two counts of drunken driving. Woods was pulled over by a state trooper Saturday in Minnetonka, Minn. Woods was arrested and later registered a .12 blood alcohol concentration on a breath test, .04 above the state's legal limit. ? DOLPHINS: Miami placed quarterback Daunte Culpepper on injured reserve. Culpepper had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery last month to remove cartilage that has hampered his recovery from surgery a year ago.washingtonpost.com
