They weren't trying to predict the future. They were trying to create self-fulfilling prophesies of defeat.

Nobody got the invasion wrong. It went swimmingly in a matter of weeks. It was the post-invasion "lets rebuild Iraq" plan (there was a plan??) that appears to have gone wrong.
