The current GOP should lose a lot of members to the Libertarians, Democrats, independents and even the Neo-Nazi and End Of Days wacko movements. Rove was a genius to weave together all those groups including the religious wackos, but none of them are happy now, so I doubt they can be woven back together again.

However this is why McCain is dangerous. He is a fiscal conservative Libertarians might like. But if he fails with his escalation in Iraq it's lights out time.

Still, never expect American voters to turn against militarism altogether. They didn't during Vietnam and they won't now. The best we can hope for I think is a centrist-progressive government which still engages in imperialism lite but also peace-making. That's America, and the only time we stopped with the military capitalism was during the period after the Great Depression but before WWII when our middleclass was starving to death. The Depression made leftwing radicals out of everyone. Just to survive. But 15 years later they called them all communists and McCarthy entered to try and destroy them with smears and turn the country to the hard right.

So continues the war between left and right. The good news is that once we get rid of Bush-Cheney, the right will have a very hard long slog to ever get back into power. Especially if we find solid evidence of really serious high crimes and treason.

They really are or will be completely discredited soon, and even if McCain were to win, he's really not one of them. He's a hybrid who listens to all sides. That said, let's not risk it. After all, we saw how in 2004 McCain put party before country and endorsed Bush over the much better candidate Kerry, and the GOP party is still badly polluted. In short, never trust the bastards again unless they really clean house. Or we do it for them.

Good. I hope any more politicians leave the republican and democratic parties which are proven failures.
