We must distinguish between social and economic liberalism. Social liberalism such as abortion, gun control, and gay rights are not winning issues. But economic liberalism (or populism) and foreign policy realism -- health care for all, higher taxes on the rich, fair trade versus free trade, and no empire building overseas -- is another kettle of fish entirely. Unfortunately much of the Democratic Party's liberalism is of the former rather than the latter variety since they too are heavily infuenced by our money dominated political system.
