Well, if the fax from the Dr. contains *his* ID, then it can be authoritatively stored as a report from your Dr. and filed as such. Of course, much, much better is for the Dr's systems to send properly formatted XML, encrypted and signed, over the net.

Well I meant something more like if a CT scan report is faxed, how can it land in the record next to last year's CT scan so they can easily be compared/reviewed?
