I remember when I was first learning about the environment, or natural history as it was known in those days. I was lucky enough to join the Victoria Junior Natural History Society, run by an old geezer named Freeman King who would take us out on rambles every Saturday. (He was old enough to have been involved in the founding of the Boy Scouts along with Baden Powell, and there's a park named after him outside Victoria, an achievement when you lack the money to buy and donate the land.)

Once he saw you understood what he was getting at, King would take you under his wing and teach you what he knew, and I was lucky enough to attain one of those leadership spots. Typically, we would walk up to some hillside, and of course we should be able to name every plant and animal, but unusually for the time, we were also expected to be able to tell where this spot was in the natural cycles of nature and consequently to be able to describe what had happened there for the last few hundred years and what would happen in the next few hundred if man did not intervene.

I missed the first moon landing when a friend and I missed the ride back from one of these outings.

As to BMC, it's a complete mystery to me. Will it continue to stay undervalued, or will it suddenly get recognized and double in no time flat? I think when the hedges get close to running out might be Brilliant's time to shine -- pun intended.
