A free and open society can only be that way if there's a large measure of trust. Trust that when you give a valet the keys to your car he doesn't steal it. Trust that when you leave your kids at daycare they don't get abused. Trust that the repairman your elderly mother hired is there to actually make repairs, not rob her blind while she's boiling a pot of tea.

Being trusting is a far cry from being stupid in my book. As a matter of fact in my book people that flagrantly and maliciously abuse your trust are the lowest scum on earth. I guess we'll just agree to disagree.
