In the political world like the non-profit world very few people get paid. The top staffers and consultants mainly. Then the righthand men or women. After that it's a big drop-off. Down to the drivers. Almost all work in political campaigns below the top level is strictly voluntary. In fact, I once suggested to Kerry's people that they hire a small army of bloggers to take on and battle each rightwing liar who tried to spread the smearvets garbage. The idea was rejected because of the payments. But it was a good idea because the Bushies were definitely organizing their lying campaign and they dumped it on us like a ton of manure. We needed that firewall to take them on. The rightwing has definitely spread a lot of money to reporters, pundits and bloggers who are willing to lie for them. People like Horowitz are on the Mellon-Scaife payrolll. Scaife also funds Newsmax and paid for the lawyers to dig up sex scandals on Clinton in the 90's, using Anne Coulter as his fictional testimony fabricator. Rightwing radio is also heavily subsidized to keep it rightwing and keep progressives out. The GOP has gotten got caught bribing several reporters and editorial writers, remember, so they must pay bloggers too. I know the Dixie Chciks smears were orchestrated out of a rightwing blog website. As were the Dan Rather accusations. Drudge often plays a role in these dirty tricks. It would be fascinating to know how the smearvet lies and other outright fabrications were spread across the the internet so immediately. Who made up the phony charges? WHo spread the talking points? How was it orchestrated? Who paid for it? Inquiring minds want to know and I hope a whistleblower steps forward. I have never posted anything for anyone else or for payment. All just by my lonesome doing my civic duty. I have also never seen a talking point sheet in my life except the ones leaked from the Republican playbook.
