Tyke, go back and look at the great Greeks. Aristotal, Plato, socrates and a zillion other bbrillant men flourished in 300 BC. They knew the world was round and calculated its diameter to within a few miles.

Had the Greeks not been completely destroyed by Rome who also burned all libraries and 99% of all greek writings civilization would be 1,000 years of where we are now.

The only jump the Greeks had left to make was from deductive logic to inductive logic.

After the Greeks were destroyed you will not find any great thinking again for almost 1,000 years! And for total volumn and sophistication of understanding that was probably not attained again until at least the 17th century and maybe the 18th century.

The ancient Greeks had learned so much because at the time learning for a short time became something the culture valued.

As Plato said: "the unexamined life is not worth living"!

Tyke, I think I see the point you were trying to make. Most societies did develop with religion of some sort. Might depend on your definition of religion. Were the Aztecs or Mayans religious in your definition?
My point is religious dogma has probably done more to suppress
scientific advancement than any other single factor. I gave some classic historical examples. More currently, witness the far right trying to suppress stem cell research.

I believe more people have been killed in the name of god than
saved by the word of god.

Thanks for the discussion.
