A Robert E. Lee story. I spent some time, about three years in seminary in the NE, New Haven to be specific. One of the faculty members views most of us treasured the most, H. Richard Niebuhr, was a huge fan of Robert E. Lee. We were all befuddled by it. For several reasons.

Niebuhr's organizational religious allegiances were to a small Brethren church in New Haven where he served as janitor and yard man. Hardly a haven for Robert E. Lee fans.

Moreover, this was during the early 60s when, for my ilk much involved in the burgeoning civil rights struggle, southern leaders in the civil war were certainly, at least not routinely, in favor.

So, the several of us read a little about Lee and picked up a piece or two of his own writings. I was not impressed. The sentiments were fine but at that stage of my own development/thinking fine sentiments didn't translate well into understanding folk.

However, a later fascination with Civil War stuff, has led me to read more than a little about Lee. Very interesting guy.

So no bad things said here.
