Certain industries rely heavily on illegal immigration: garment making, furniture making, meat packing, food processing to name a few.

Yeah, but as far as anyone knows these industries are NOT making record profits. Garment makers in the US can barely survive, much less suffer pay increases. And the one meat packer we looked at (Swift) had net margins of 1.5% in their best quarter ever. There isn't a lot of extra cash slushing around the industries where illegal workers are common, excluding prostitution, of course.

I never said there were a lot of profits floating around these industries. Its even worse for restaurants and supermarkets. For an example, Safeway's five year PM is 1.15%. However, hiring illegals to get around this problem is only forestalling the inevitable. Certainly SWY didn't take that route.

And frankly, if forced to fire their illegals, I don't think these industries will move to Mexico. I think they will either find new ways to improve their margins or raise the cost of the product and the American consumer will have to adjust. Forstalling the inevitable doesn't serve anyone....the industry, the American consumer, nor the illegals nor even the Mexican economy that benefits from all the money being sent back by illegals. In fact, getting rid of illegals may be the kick that Mexico needs to deal with its corruption problems. Given its natural resources, the Mexican economy should be much stronger than it is.

And one last thing......most times laws are created for good reason. There are the exceptions but usually they are remedied in some way at some point. Therefore, violating these laws usually ends up causing more problems than had the law been followed. For an example, our immigration laws were set up before there was widespread identity theft. Now we are finding out that one of the major perpetrators of identify theft in this country are rings bringing in illegals into the US. Eighteen year olds are coming of age finding out they have huge credit problems because their ID was stolen by an illegal. That is just one of the many problems caused by allowing illegals in this country. Its too bad.......Californians sat on the problem for years becuase they were addicted to cheap labor. Now that problem has spread throughout the nation. Its going to take twice as money to end it had it been ended in CA like it should have been in the first place.
