The Unicom system was built for 30M subs. Since reaching that figure in May 2005 (3 years post startup), the net sub adds have average 325k per month.

I think they hit a capacity of 30 million after phase II of their buildout. They added signficant capacity after that.

This CDG PR reports contract awards in January '04 taking it to 50 million, but I actually think the current capacity is somewhere around 70 million subs.

The dreadful results in CDMA over the last year is a direct result of Unicom's decision to clean up their financials. They decided it no longer made sense to provide an additional subsidy for CDMA handsets over GSM and unfortunately, the sub results speak for themselves. I never would have thought that Unicom would still be adding 1 million GSM subscribers a month, five years after their CDMA launch.
