That is part of it. During the 1990s, Gartner Group kept predicting that EDA would be switching to Windows. They beat that drum hard enough so that many EDA companies started to promise they would move their tools over. Finally, there was a conference in the mid-1990s where there was a revolt. The engineers said they didn't want to move to Windows. If they had to move, they wanted to move to Linux. The engineers for the EDA companies joined in. Seems like the only ones who wanted Windows was Gartner and EDA company management.
