LUSAKA (Mineweb.com) --Just over two months after Zambia's biggest miner, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Plc was forced to suspend operations due to environmental damage, the country's second largest miner has halted operations at one of its mines.
Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) Plc, majority owned by Carlisa Investment Corporation (Carlisa itself is owned by Swiss giant Glencore International AG and Canada? First Quantum Minerals Limited among others), suspended production at two shafts at its Nkana operation in Kitwe after flooding which arose when three underground dewatering pumps are reported to have ?lown up·in unexplained circumstances.
The Central and South Ore Body (SOB) shafts have been flooded for the past two days, according to insiders. Floodwaters have risen to between 23 metres and 70 metres. These shafts support the key new area of the Nkana mine from which most output is scheduled to be produced ·and Nkana is MPM? most productive operation.
This will be a longer shutdown than the Konkola one earlier
