To me what's better for society is to let the market set the wage. That's generally true as a purely practical matter, and even if their are exceptions, I also support the idea as a matter of principle. Ignoring for a moment the principle (since you obviously disagree), even if there are some cases where society would be better off by enforcing lower wages, if we get in the habit of having the government do that, its unlikely to be perfect in its estimates. You will get cases where forcing wages lower causes problems, and cases where forcing them higher causes problems.

And I've been in situations where I've felt overpaid for my job

So would it have been just and of practical benefit to have the government force you to accept less?
