"Tell me again about those mechanisms..."

Easy enough. Something pumps a little energy into the system. temps. go up a little, ice melts, exposing permafrost and any organics covered by the ice. The organics start to oxidize and the permafrost, being very dark as a rule, absorbs light and starts to melt. The organics produce CO2, the permafrost releases first methane and then CO2 as it dries out and oxidizes. Which causes the temp. to go up a little and starting a positive feedback cycle. The increasing temps foster plant growth. along with the rise in CO2, causing the positive feedback to get damped somewhat.
