That can work. But certain parts of the system aren't in operation unless your scale is in millions of years. And that is ok too. But then humans are out of the equation, too ephemeral. If you want to include humans, you need to operate on a scale that is closer to them, and in that case only a subject of the Earth system is of interest. Because the rest doesn't participate.
