What makes Dubai so expensive?

What makes Norway so expensive?

One guess you have, Ted.

Dubai is expensive, with minimal mass transit. However, the maids above would live with and be fed by their host family. Loads of workers get by on ~$400 per month, however. 12 people (not a family, individuals) to a 3 bedroom apartment is common.

What makes Dubai so expensive? A shortage of land? They have to import most things? All of the above?

Plenty of land, but it's all desert. And I mean serious desert - sand everywhere with no "fields".

The main thing that makes it expensive for the majority of the population in Dubai is low pay. Relative to the rest of the world's big cities, it's reasonable. But the wage gap is huge. On the other hand, the workers that come to Dubai to earn ~$300 per month come because that is an attractive wage relative to their home country, so they are used to living their life without what we consider "disposable income".

Even with the proposed road toll Dubai is still cheaper than cities such as London, New York and Paris.

How costly are your city's services?

Dubai: With the rising cost of living in Dubai leaving residents unhappy with daily expenses, the announcement of a road toll on one of the emirate's busiest roads has been seen by many as another 'extra' making them reach further into their pockets.
