<<<The Carmax report shows that the middle class is substituting lower-priced used cars for buying new cars.

According to Carmax:

We continued to see a rebound in sales of SUVs and trucks, which were adversely affected last year by consumer reaction to higher gas prices. Sales of luxury vehicles also continued to comprise a larger percentage of our sales.

SUV's and luxury cars accounted for the strong sales.

I see no significant shift in preferences out of new and into used. BMW and Mercedes have been reporting very strong new sales. SUV sales rebounded fairly strongly for Ford and GM last month. Toyota and Honda are setting records every month.

When the middle class is truly cutting back, they will be buying used Toyota Corollas, not used BMW's.
