While there were relatively few Jews in the US at the time of the War of Northern Aggression ( aka the Civil War, 1860-65) there were a number of Jews in the US in the 1700s.

There were number of Sepharic Jews in the US, especially around Philadephia. It appears that many of these moved towards assimilation.

There was a very large German immigration until the Civil War, which brought in large numbers of Jews. A number of those in New York formed the basis of "Our Crowd", which was the title of a book on this group.

The "Our Crowd" group saw the large numbers of very poor Jews, often farmers, and usually not German, who arrived after the US Civil War, and saw their potential to be come the next Irish type social problem. So they arranged for them to travel to land in the upper plains states and Texas. They basically stuffed them into boxcars...
At lest the transportees usually ended up with land.

The out marriage rate for Jews in the US has been very high for a long time.

Also, many Jews drop the religeous acitivity and will call themselves atheist, agnostic or Unitarian ( ;-)). I was told that the ZBT fraternity would approach students who listed agnostic on their religeous preferences because so many were Jewish.

So today the US has a population where maybe 10-15% of the people know they have at least one Jewish ancestor.

The 'danger' the US presents is assimilation. In the views of some people, more US culture is influenced by Jews, the stronger the pull of assimilation. They have to work too hard to see American culture as the other.
