I always thought I was middle class until the democrats decided I was rich. By your definition I am neither one.

With the richest senators being mostly democrats, I can't understand how anyone thinks the democrats are going to help sock it to the rich as you have defined it.

Rich would be those whose income is mainly from investments and other non-wage sources.

This makes sense. If you can live off your investment income you're probably "rich".

But some exception to that rule should be made for retired people who have save enough to get by following 30-40+ years of work. It doesn't seem to fair to have someone work 40 years, save, retire at a reasonable income from investments, and then tax away their retirement income because they've fallen into the rich category as a result of no longer having a salaried income.

Rich would be those whose income is mainly from investments and other non-wage sources.

So if you make $40k a year as a consultant your "rich". Or if you lose your job, don't have a huge accumulation of wealth, but do manage to make some (the majority of) your income from trading your rich?

I think income levels, total wealth levels, or even subjective identification would better than using the source of income. If you make a middle class income (and don't have a huge amount of accumulated wealth) then your middle class even if you don't have a white-collar or lower managerial job.
