It seems that, so far at least, piracy has not stopped the owners of intellectual property from reaping the lion's share of the profits from their creations, presumably by staying a step ahead of the pirates via continuous R&D. So, if the pirates want to earn more than a pittance, they must start doing R&D of their own.
