I made a mistake replying on this thread. I would prefer to continue this conversation on Dale's Center thread.

There's a political component to all this, and it's a point I make too often, and that's the degree to which governments don't address the negative consequences of globalization, to that degree they lay the conditions for a political reaction. I think we already see the makings of such in the US.

Could you reply, if you do so, back on Dale's thread? Thanks.

The article you posted is the strongest counter to the bond bubble thesis -- it basically argues that the current account deficit is secondary in an otherwise win-win situation where we move up the ladder. The problem I have with it is perhaps similar in some ways to your concerns -- we are not leading the world in education and may soon lose our innovation edge.
