I've read through all the docs on 3GPP Rel6, trying to determine if the same IP Voice content will be enabled as RevA will support. While I see a lot of QoS type enhancements, I also see several circuit-switched enhancements in Rel6 that would seem unnecessary if these applications were transitioning to IP. Do you think the existing CSD Video calls will migrate to IP in Rel6, or beyond? Same for PTT? I'm not sure if the answer is definitive, but the more I look, the more I am convinced that support for real-time services over a packet network is going to wait for Release 7. This paper from Cingular provides the clearest comments on the lack of support for "conversational services" in HSDPA. It seems that support for these real time services was going to be looked at in Release 7 but Cingular proposed moving that to a "Technical Enhancement" of Release 6 (this was in March '05". 3gpp.org I followed the course of their proposal but it eventually ended up getting reorganised into two different groups. The gaming portion seemed to still be working under Release 6 but the last thing I found was that there was disagreement on whether the latency requirements could be met in Release 6. The other group was looking at "continuous connectivity" for packet data services and was clearly looking to be incorporated in Release 7. Basically, I think Cingular's proposal got bogged down and they are going to be out of luck until Release 7. Here is a comment from 3G Americas on the support for these services in Release 7.3gamericas.org While earlier 3GPP releases already provide efficient support for these services, 3GPP Rel-7 focuses on providing improved support and performance for real-time conversational and interactive services such as Push-to-talk Over Cellular, picture and video sharing, and Voice and Video over IP. These services are starting to become available as operators deploy IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based on 3GPP Rel-5. A further evolution towards packet switching is going to come through HSPA+. The 3G America's paper describes some of their design goals on page 36. HSPA+ is therefore an enhancement, where simplifications and rationalizations agreed for LTE/SAE are partially applied to the HSPA system, providing enhanced performances and leveraging the existing infrastructure. The HSPA+ system vision is positioned towards providing full service delivery through the PS Domain. I am not sure what the timeframe is for HSPA+, but the 3GPP track is clearly a long ways from a complete packet switched network. Slacker
