I hope it is not too late. The worst thing about internationalism and "global do-gooderism" of the Wilsonian "make the world safe for democracy" variety is the moral hazard and lack of accountability that goes with it. Take this Iraq adventure, for instance. Nobody really knows for sure what it is all about. Are we there to "spread democracy" or are there other agendas? Might we be there to re-open the Mosul to Haifa oil pipeline and provide Israel with an oil supply? Are we protecting the Saudis? Or might we be there to check the Chinese, Iranians or the Russians? Nobody knows, at least nobody outside Bush's inner circle knows. If we had gone there for purely nationalistic reasons, say to "protect American interests" then at least there would have been established a standard, a benchmark. My country has been engaged in far too much of this destructive activity, including two world wars in which we had no reason to participate. I think it is wonderful that China takes these strong measures to protect her sovereignty, if she doesn't she will loose it. In time this must inspire a strong nationalist response here and elsewhere in the world. It will be a really good thing. I am a Christian and I am sure that the Christian faith would be no danger to China, it could be a great benefit. But foreign missionaries could also be a vector for subversion and so I understand the need to control their activities. But much more dangerous that Christian missionaries are these secular do-gooders; on CNN not long ago I saw an interview with Clinton while he was roaming around loose somewhere in China. You folks better keep your eye on him. <grin> Clinton was there with his "International AIDS" outreach. You should consider that sort of thing an insult. Does China not have a public health ministry? If Clinton wants to save people from AIDS why doesn't he go to San Francisco or New York, his adopted home where he at least understands the language? With Clinton you will get more than anti-viral pills. Merry Christmas! Slagle
