you shouldn't base your entire outlook on what you saw at Dell. Dell has a bad reputation for crappy pay even in Austin. but they aren't the only game in town. i don't even consider Dell to be a tech company--they are more like a logistics company.

if you instead compare actually similar tech companies to one another, or better yet compare the salaries for a single company with offices in SV and Austin, i think you will find salaries are much closer than you imagined. people in SV will take a 15% paycut to come to Austin. they can buy an OK house for 20% of the price in SV, or buy a really nice house for 30% of the price. no wonder more companies are moving operations here.
