Gerry Ford is gone at 93. Chevy Chase loses another one. Ford was a Republican, but too nice to be a Republican. He wasn't a great President, but, given that he was elected neither VP or Prez, and the guy before him had nearly taken the country into the toilet, did a pretty good job.

Pardoning Nixon lost Ford the election. The nation, including Yours Truly, wanted blood, and I was disgusted with Ford for pardoning him. I understand the argument he made for healing the nation, but still feel that it was a brokered deal. "I'll resign and let you take over, if you swear to pardon me." Given the alternative was Nixon toughing it out, he made the right choice. The difference is that once you are President, neither Nixon nor anyone else could force him to keep his promise. Breaking a promise to a criminal is not a sin, IMHO, and that was the best choice available.

Ford was conservative, but he wasn't evil. Younger folks won't understand that there were once decent conservatives.

One thing I like about him is that he never participated in the deification of Reagan, who was a disastrous President.

I think that somewhere in Heaven, an angel is being hit by a misguided golf ball.
