People scoff at iran's desire to have nuclear energy but a barrel of oil costs them about as much as it costs us.

If they produce a barrel for $4 that they could sell for $50, and instead of selling it they use it for domestic energy needs, the cost to them is $54 (the $4 they put into the barrel plus the $50 they could have gotten for it).

There are only so many barrels of oil left so every one they use domestically hurts them economically.

They could turn the thing around and ask "Given how much coal is available in the United States, what does the U.S. need nuclear energy for?"
