I think Austin could really benefit from a light rail system such as Salt Lake City has. It would allow people to park distant from downtown and still get down there to party and eat. In SLC, you can take your bike, which is great.

I'd run it from far S. Congress to the capitol and from far N Guadalupe, then later add east/west extensions. You'd also need parking at all stations. Even for people who aren't on it's route, it would allow them to avoid having to find a parking place downtown, as it does in SLC.

I think it would have instant ridership, and would promote businesses all along it's routes. Austin has a MUCH more vibrant nightlife than Salt lake city has, and it works.
