Yes, the Nazis and Adolf didn't win by a mile, like King George II had huge support for a while after 911. But they did have so much support that they were able to leverage their support into sufficient control that they did get some laws passed and then went into their totalitarian mode.

While true on a theoretical, legal, and judicial basis, in practise, it's more repressive than other places. On a day to day basis, people can do a lot more in many other countries without reference to some busy-body bureaucrat for permission. Not many of us get involved with habeas corpus and various constitutional rights. Mostly our lives are more practical.

Is it legal, just as one little item, for a woman to go bare-breasted on a beach in La Jolla? Or Florida? I recall mass hysteria over Janet Jackson wearing a star over a nipple in public, as seen on tv. glengreen.com
