Excellent links!

Thanks!

(Probably the Iranian coups and the Guatemala coup represent the --- publicly known only, of course :-) --- greatest classical 'successes' of the C.I.A., certainly 'successes' from the operation point-of-view of achieving the desired immediate goals, and in highly cost-effective manner!)

Still, I'd argue that too many short-term 'successes' like those could go a very long way toward ruining a nation such as ours --- as the 'blowback', the unintended, perhaps unimagined, long-term strategic CONSEQUENCES of these actions were harmful indeed to American long-term strategic interests and global goals.

Guess it's a long way from successfully achieving an operational tasking, and in having leaders with foresight enough to realize that actions generally produce re-actions... and consequences.

In BOTH instances, I'd argue that a little more faith in the long-term benefits of Democracy and freedom (as exampled by the totally different approaches Presidents Truman and Eisenhower took to the proposed Iranian coup to topple the elected government) would have benefited America MUCH MORE (as in: likely no Theocratic government taking power in Iran... and 30 year plus repressive military dictatorship in Guatemala & no Sandinistas either across the border.)

Sometimes FAITH in the power of what's best and rightest in our own country seems the most difficult for some leaders to sustain....
