The infections and deaths have declined over the last month, which is bad news for the bug because it's winter in the northern hemisphere and it should be gaining victims if it's going to go critical this northern winter, and it isn't.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe a glimmer of good news. Since my main source of H5N1 news is this forum, every time I log on I hope I don't see 50 new messages here!

Graph of H5N1 deaths: who.int

x = 10 deaths ..... Death rate

2003......4...x ........ 100%
2004....32...xxx ........ 75%
2005....42...xxxx ....... 40%
2006....80...xxxxxxxx ..... 69%
2007....10...x..............90%

Total so far 273 cases 167 deaths 61% death rate

Only 10 deaths in 2007 after 1.5 winter months means H5N1 will be struggling to match 2006 achievement unless it gets a turbo-charging. Maybe it has peaked already and wild bird populations are gaining immunity meaning they won't be able to deliver it to domestic birds and humans.
