While he had misgivings regarding many of the Bush policies, he would not undermine his party, the Republican party. While this may seem cowardly on the surface, it is in line with the man's character throughout his life. He supported the Vietnam war almost to the end, which was about 7-years after Walter Cronkite publicly questioned it. This was in line with his conservative background and those of his consituents. He never introduced a major piece of legislation in 26-years in Congress, so you know he's not one to rock the boat. He's a team player from his days as a football player at Michigan. He was literally and figuratively a Boy Scout, but it seems that's what the nation needed to heal the wounds from the Nixon administration. He did the best he knew how, and he was a pretty honest, straightforward guy of high integrity. He was thrust into a situation he never sought. He and Carter, while not effective and possibly not qualified, brought back ethical conduct to the oval office after a period of darkness. One of the stains on his career from a historian's point of view would be the mercenary-like corporate activities shortly after he left office, which also encouraged the same from those who followed. However, his take pales when compared to those of Clinton and Bush 41. Anyway, don't beat the guy up. He took over at a time the US was in a serious Constitutional crisis, and he managed it pretty well in hindsight. If you know anything about the mid-70's, you also know it was not a whole lot different than the 60's in the issues that were at the forefront of public debate. He did pretty well, and we should be thankful he stepped up to the plate in 1974.
