Terrible idea; big mistake. Two different concepts. If the quote said that he supported Bush's decision to invade Iraq, that would be significant. But that's not the same notion as supporting the war. He said in another quote that he hadn't spoken out publicly about his reservations. That's a demonstration of his support of the war, not necessarily his support of having engaged it. Yeah, yeah, I know. All this examination is boring... <g>

This may seem too semantically nitpicky for some here, but saying one supports the war is very different (imo) than believing it was an ill-conceived and poorly executed plan. Ford sounded as if he were being fairly careful in his choice of words. No ex-commander-in-chief would state he didn't support the effort in which we are so deeply engaged; he would never send that message to the troops or the country. I know many don't believe it on PfP, but those of us who opposed this war, and believe it was wrong, still wish for a successful outcome and do fully support our troops. It is clear that Ford had reservations about Bush's actions and about those who advised him. The support is greatly weakened for Bush's decisions, but that is different from our caring about our troops and our country and the outcome of all this.
