Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc. said Thursday that same-store sales fell 23.1 percent in December.

Brooklyn Park-based Wilsons (Nasdaq: WLSN), a retailer specializing in leather apparel, said it had total sales of $75.7 million for the five weeks ended December 30, compared to $110.2 million for the final five weeks of 2005.

Same-store sales, or sales in stores that have been open at least one year, decreased 23.1 percent for the five weeks ended December 30, compared with a 7.7 percent decrease in the year-ago period.

For the full year, same-store sales decreased 17.0 percent compared to a decrease of 2.2% for the same period last year.

Michael Searles, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement that the company was disappointed with the results, attributing them to reduced traffic.
