I tend to think of it as a special "virtue" of the right. I just finished the day's NYTimes because I was busy with other things. There's a full page ad attacking Carter's new book. It's not a counter argument but a very personal attack. And contradicted within the terms of its own text.

It's very much the notion that if you tell a lie and then repeat it often enough it will be believed.
