Mq, I think you have to take TR's slogans in context. There are always exceptions, but Roosevelt hit the nail on the head for the context of his remarks.

I have some Quakers in a couple of my ancestors lines, so be careful, Mq. And don't forget, Teddy Roosevelt had never heard of the thugs you mentioned.....Adolf Hitler, Adolf Eichmann, Lt William Calley, Saddam Hussein, Charlie Manson, Tim McVeigh, the American Taleban, Mr Shoebomber, Dr Mengele, Tojo, Mao ...

Interesting though, that you mention these people. They are all of "modern" times --....

The Quakers and pacifists of yesteryear actually believed in serving people, and many of them did that by going to a battlefield, and caring for the soldiers there....or they actually did some of the supply, latrine, or other grunt work that was necessary. Most of those folks were not cowards, by any stretch.
