What Reagan-Gingrich started failed under Bush-Delay. The logical outcome of the trickle down pro-corporate economy and an arrogant imperial presidency has been failure. Barry Goldwater would disapprove. Something very corrupt infected the dream of moral conservatism. Reagan got by on charm and charisma. But his ideas were not very sound. He left a huge deficit, allowed the tremendously costly S+L debacle, waged a totally dishonest war in Nicaragua, got Marines blown up in Lebanon, had Ollie North pay off terrorists in Iran with weapons, armed Saddam Hussein and attacked the environment using creeps like James Watt. But I will say this about Reagan, at least he apologized and took responsibility. Despite Reagan's manly movie star charm and Nancy's balancing liberalism the legacy of the Reagan-Bush era is not one of success, it is very mixed. Clinton and Kennedy were more successful as presidents, particularly since they created surpluses, not huge deficits, and therefore there was more money to actually help the American people. Also neither Clinton nor Kennedy stuck us with illegal or failed wars. I might also remind you that Reagan was struck by Alzheimers while still in office, so the last few years of his second term he was not really running things.
