Because character is just one aspect of all sorts of aspects of being a person.

Just as one obvious example, if the person has a genetic defect in their DNA, meaning they die at age 21, then their character isn't going to be particularly significant in their life. Their DNA will normally have a much greater impact. Or, we could take that argument back to zygote stage - a zygote has zero character and their lives are a function of biochemistry, not mind [or character].

A person can have all the character in the world, but they won't be inventing relativity theory if they don't have the intellectual wherewithal, as another example.

Or, they might have bad luck - the old "hit by a bus" or "bowled by a meteorite" syndrome. That trumps character.

It was basically just political sloganism. A boring bromide.

Maybe because there are so many definitions of the word "character", Mq was puzzled as to which one Teddy meant with that quote. I of course, think TR meant this definition, as did I..... IMO, there is nothing stupid nor superficial about this definition of character....
