What kinds of players would cooperate in this trade?

Any of the big investment banks would take the other side of a large trade at the right price. Can even be done as a private transaction, which I think means it would not show up in the volume figures at all.

Any of these transactions might have an offsetting trade in the common by the initiator, either long or short. So it's not always possible to tell if say a new write of a call is actually bearish - it might be done in conjunction with a new long stock position, which would make it somewhat bullish (equivalent to writing a put).
