"Will the first shot succeed or fail, and when will that be?"

Dunno. I haven't seen any benchmarks. Based on the architectural details released, it will depend on the benchmark. Multi-threaded applications could have a significant per clock advantage. Floating point/SSEx should be at least equal, if not better on a per clock basis. And virtualization should be significantly better. Will it be the darling of the gamer crowd? I dunno. I'd rather see AMD the darling of the commercial crowd. Which, between HP and Dell, it has a shot at.

Doug,

Is your whole measure of INTC success based upon the performance crown of highest bin?

I grant you that INTC will hold the crown until at least May (in shipping for revenue.) Maybe not even until July. Maybe AMD will pull off a "Conroe demo" 5 months before shipping - maybe not.

There is more to business success than the performance crown, however. I don't have a link, but I think it was Dvorak who pointed out that while INTC has the performance crown, the lowest bin coming out of AMD beats 75% of INTC's current production at the end of 2006. It may not be exactly right, but it is not wrong in concept - INTC is producing a some gems and a lot of junk.

Speaking of which, I wonder if INTC will finally reduce their inventory this quarter.

This past month it has made little sense to be in either of these stocks.
