Fantastic discussion of a fine old word I have never heard before. While reading through it, I concluded VN would have - of course! - used the French pronounciation. I was immensely pleased to see languagehat ultimately agreed.

Btw, the word is a good example of why Wikipedia is dangerous. It relates majorat to fideicommis, which is utterly wrong as fideicommis in French law appears to be an inherited trust for the benefit of another, not a first-born's primogeniture right. A fideicomiso, in Spanish speaking countries, is much more like a common law trust. An old prof is The Man in this field. links.jstor.org
