I'm not sure I sympathized with the defenders of Masada as most Christians and Jews do. The Sicarii were noteworthy for killing fellow Jews they felt were collaborating with the Romans.

The Zealots at Masada were led by a man named Eleazar ben Ya'ir, one of the Sicarii leaders who had commanded some of them during the siege of Jerusalem. In 66 A.D., at the start of the Jewish War, a group had attacked the Roman garrison at Masada and captured it, and it had remained in Jewish hands.

And who were the Sicarii?

Some assert that it was the activities of the Sicarii which led the Romans to destroy the second temple.

So from my perspective, the Sicarii/Zealots were not much different than present day Al Qai'da.
