Oil companies are colluding on their gouging, PR campaigns and accounting tricks. And Bush-cheney are in league with them.

It's extremely suspicious that after gasoline prices doubled and they all enjoyed record profits, they can claim their profit margins are stable and modest. That doesn't make sense, does it? Where is the extra money going if not into the profit column? And since congress has refused to investigate or put the CEO's under oath, we just don't know if they are telling the truth. Both the Whiute House and GOP congress have been in big oil's pocket since 2001. Since the energy gouging didn't start until Bush-cheney were nominated in June 2000, the Clintonites didn't have time to do anything it either.

One of the problems here is that since WWII the Petroleum Institute (including all major oil companies) has supposedly been political neutral, but are not anymore with Bush-cheney-Delay in power. Plus, there is no regulation law that can force them to open their books. Everything is voluntary and on the honor system. So if you trust Exxon and Chevron to tell the truth about hundreds of billions in excess revenues and how much of that is profit vs. write-offs, maybe you're just being a sucker. When there is that much extra money at stake, there is a huge-huge incentive to lie, coverup, hide assets, use accounting tricks, loop-holes, etc. etc.

One thing we found out from Enron, Worldcom and others. Profits and losses can be hidden and disguised. And unless there's a real investigation with accountants closing down the HQ buildings and seizing computer hard-drives, we'll just never know.

One thing I know is that all these price gougings and spikes have come with Bush-Cheney-DElay in control when they were not feeling politically vulnerable from democratic investigations. That is no coincidence. And I am sure the truth is that oil company profits are much higher than 8-9%. Because of the incentive for them to avoid windfall profits taxes. Also, if I were you I'd quit parroting the oil company's PR spin. It's counter-productive. We need to get to the bottom of this. It's very possible over a trillion dollars has been stolen from US consumers since the summer of 2000, and we need that money back to pay for the Iraq War, Katrina and a new clean fuels program.
